For this review we will discuss Meadowcraft Patio Furniture, an established name in the industry that focuses on wrought iron patio pieces such as those found in the Athens Collection pictured right (view the Athens Deep Seating here). Manufactured in Wadley, Alabama, Meadowcraft patio furniture is one of a few American-manufactured brands available today. While being made in America is an attractive feature most people love, it's not the only outstanding aspect of Meadowcraft.
Each piece of iron patio furniture is worked, or wrought, by skilled Meadowcraft artisans that dedicate themselves to quality. This old-world approach to production allows for this traditional material to be worked into beautiful shapes, scrolls, twists and turns. But while wrought iron has been used in outdoor furniture for centuries, it traditionally offers drawbacks such as rust and water damage.
But Meadowcraft has addressed these negative aspects with their collections of wrought iron patio furniture. Each frame is electrostatically primed using a dip process, which ensures every inch is covered; this primer surface is four times greater at resisting corrosion than the typical primer. After the primer dries, each chair, table, ottoman or chaise lounge frame is hit with a powder-coated finish which adds color and additional durability. Meadowcraft also offers frames that are welded, not bolted, for added structural strength.
Iron patio furniture has been used on porches and in gardens for hundreds of years, originally a copy of cemetery benches. Old English gardens and Victorian-era patios offered cast-iron examples that usually were painted white and offered revival designs of ferns, grapes, foliage and other pastoral elements. Most modern manufacturers of patio furniture mimic these early examples, typically relying on classic style and design for the overall look. This dedication to creating furniture that mimics antiques ensures the pieces never go out of style, which can happen with modern patio furniture which looks great now, but can quickly look tacky.
While Meadowcraft does utilize classic designs, they do sprinkle in modern elements. You will find traditional patterns and motifs in Meadowcraft furniture, such as the filigree (floral pattern) in the Dogwood Dining Collection (view the Dogwood Dining Collection here). But Meadowcraft mixes these traditional aspects with contemporary characteristics. So while the Dogwood offers this classic filigree in the cresting or top rail of the chair, the stretchers and legs feature a contemporary, curved look that is anything but traditional. By mixing styles Meadowcraft creates transitional patio furniture that will fit into virtually any space.
There is another attractive aspect of Meadowcraft Patio Furniture that cannot be ignored: their deep seating collections offer some of the most comfortable seating experiences available on the patio furniture market today. Collections like the Grayson Deep Seating showcase cuddle chairs, club chairs and ottomans with high-density foam cushions (the Grayson is pictured left as an example; view the Grayson Deep Seating Collection here).
