When I had my first apartment, and then my first home, the popular decor was all country all the time. Everything had a ruffle or a goose; heavy painted wood hearts adorned the flowery wall-papered walls, there were bows and valances and rag rugs. Everything was matchy-matchy and so CUTE that, in retrospect, it makes me a little sick. I know it will be back; it is the way of fashion. But right now I am pretending it never happened.
Instead, let's focus on the early 21st century version of interior design (which also translates to outdoor furnishings) which is fresh, clean, and contemporary. Zuo Modern, a thoroughly modern furniture company established in 2005, is the antithesis of all things ruffled and goose-filled.
Two good friends, Luis Ruesga and Steve Poon, shared an entrepreneurial dream of creating a furniture company that featured the fun, the beautiful, the inventive, the accessible, and they realized that dream when they established Zuo Modern in 2005.
Zuo Modern features indoor and outdoor furnishings and accessories; the collections are fashionable and sophisticated, but still maintain a buoyant and lighthearted air. It is a fabulous fusion of mid-century modern, ultra-contemporary and upscale industrial style, with a few glittering chandeliers thrown in for effect.
Family Leisure has embraced the Zuo Modern esthetic and includes a wide variety of furnishings in their inventory. Here is a great example of how Zuo Modern manages to be chic and fun in one; the "Pop" bar stool.
Remind you of anything? This plush and plucky stool seat is reminiscent of a champagne bottle top; hence the "Pop." Toss in a bit of industrial distressed leatherette and a flat black iron frame and you have a stool that is both vintage and new, rugged and urbane.
On the other end of the spectrum, you will find the "Fly" bar stool; a flight of fancy in white leatherette and chrome. This deco-ish bar stool is bright and contemporary; practical yet exuberant.
Zuo takes the classic Chesterfield and does it up in silver for a look that is inviting and unexpected; it shows while you have seriously good taste you don't take yourself too seriously. This is Zuo Modern's forte. Aristocrat Arm Chair Silver
Check out this nifty mid-century marvel in buttercup yellow Savannah Chair Golden. You could freshen up a corner in a dark room with this ray of sunshine you can sit on.
Zuo Modern's talents don't stop indoors; they have a gorgeous and unique line of outdoor patio furniture as well.
Zuo goes whimsical with this fantastic Faye Bay Beach chair Faye Bay Beach Chair Cranberry and Gray. Feel like a mermaid among the coral in this unique and colorful patio lounge chair.
Here's an industrial take on the traditional picnic table; the Bodega. Zuo does it up right with aluminum and marine grade polymer. The mixture is dazzling yet utilitarian; industrial chic at its finest.
Zuo Modern also does some pretty incredible lighting. Here's another example of they add a bit of whimsy to something that is traditionally very staid and formal. The Centurion Centurion pops a classic chandelier into an ultra-modern cube. It's completely unexpected and simply sensational.
